This perhaps explains the shift to commercial ads on this site too ... to bad ... the banner above still implies enthusiast concept. Maybe it's just me making a distinction between enthusiast site and commercial site/product.

In any case, congratulations ... BRAIN seems like a fine product. Time will tell if it has an appeal as a commercial product. Good luck ...

Re:B.R.A.I.N. is released! - 2008/06/20 05:14 The ads are there to cover the hosting bills btw - a few cents per click hardly makes it a commercial venture (this week were are on $2.37 ad revenue). I think you'll find many other 'non commercial' sites running Google ads - they're not evil, you can click on them and nothing bad will happen to you. You might even find the subject matter relevant.

An enthusiast site can only be driven by its community contributions. Of course anyone can have their content / project / anything publicised if it's related to the subject. This is still an enthusiast site because I've kept it going since October 2005 - if I wasn't enthusiastic and no one visited then it wouldn't be here (we are doing around 2000 unique visitors a month and a total of nearly 4000 at the moment - that's visits not hits/page impressions, and excludes web crawlers/spiders).

Hosting Google ads also seems to have pushed us up the search results too - have a google for 'pc bot' and '914 pc bot'. Hopefuly this will drive our community forward even more.

I expect quite a lot of time and effort has gone into writing BRAIN. Compared to other complete robot software solutions (not development platforms) it's actually not that expensive.

Btw - do you think Microsoft Robotics Studio is a commercial, or non commercial venture, what if we were to promote that?

Hi, sorry, no shareware for BRAIN at this time. I did struggle for quite some time on what the financial model (if any) should be for BRAIN, but the reality is that many, many hours have gone into developing BRAIN, and a lot of money has been spent buying bots, hardware, and developer tools, to develop the software, and 3rd party components have had to be purchased to embed certain functionality into BRAIN - so unfortunately, shareware is not an option at this time...

Considering what is available on the market at this time, for those price points, the price for BRAIN is very competitive. But as you say, the market will determine the value.

If you do download it and give it try, let me know what you think.

Re:B.R.A.I.N. is released! - 2008/06/22 01:00 As for the shareware thing, think of it this way-the money that goes towards you having software to run your robot goes to funding improvements for B.R.A.I.N. So it's not like Dave is going to leave you in the dark.

Re:B.R.A.I.N. is released! - 2008/06/22 20:05 There are lots of things we can do to our robots to make them do new and different things: upgrades, add-ons, and whatnot. Most of them require a bunch of valuable time and energy, sometimes real money, not to mention a tall pile of technical skill.

BRAIN quickly turns the "raw development platform" into a feature-filled functioning robot that can do all sorts of cool things. It's not all things to all people, but BRAIN makes the robot accessible and useful to anyone who can drive a mouse.
