Re:client / server connection - 2009/06/06 19:40 Krisf,

I tried every different framerate / resolution to try and get my cpu utilization down while using BRAIN. Every time, the cpu utilization would go to 100%, then after five minutes my bot would overheat and shutdown. I'm using a Commell motherboard with an Intel core 2 duo.

Couldn't figure out why client/server mode did the same for me. Eventually gave up, though I never did purchase a full BRAIN license.

Re:client / server connection - 2009/06/06 19:44 Ha, replacing the VIA with a Core2 Duo certainly makes a difference. It will make a difference in battery life, too. As will RAM...don't install too much.

BRAIN is working out very well for me, too. Check the bottom of the Robot Status page for some new performance monitoring tools Dave just added.

Re:client / server connection - 2009/06/06 20:46 I do not follow. Are you saying that the Core 2 Duo and too much RAM is the cause of CPU over-utilization and overheating in client/server mode?

Dave...

I am trying out BRAIN (ver 1.2.1) on my robot Igor. When I start the application on the client machine I get an error:

The same thing happens when I click on "Connect to Robot".

The robot server is running on Igor and I have tried other port settings with the same result. The connection to the video server works fine, so my network connectivity doesn't seem to be an issue.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated... Kris F

I couldn't connect to your Robot over the network either Kris, pings wouldn't work... any firewall in the way?

But, I have a new build of BRAIN (1.2.3) that will be posted today. I've spent quite a bit of time optimizing the server, reducing the CPU load, etc.

For those of you who haven't tried the latest version of BRAIN, it's night and day to the older ones. There have literally been hundreds of bugs fixes, optimizations, enhancements, etc. There is a new script editor, tons of new script commands to control the Robot, radically improved motion detection, Twitter support, built in web browser , and much more...

There is still much to do, but it's a significantly better product that a few versions ago.

Be sure to see the robotgraymatter web site where I provide the online documentation for BRAIN - in particular, see the release notes section for the bug fixes and enhancements.

Kris - if after this build, there is still a problem, let me know, and I'll make sure it's fixed if it's a BRAIN issue.

Dave...
(Any issues with BRAIN, don't hesitate to reach out - I'm pretty responsive and introduce new builds quite frequently).

Could it be a firewall issue?

I think Brian had a config file that let you change the port number, perhaps you could try that.

BRAIN has a pretty rich settings file (see BRAIN/System/) that let's you change network settings, etc. All of these settings can be set via the UI also.

Agreed - upgrading the processor in general, makes a huge difference. As the robot starts to do more (vision detection, motion detection, speech, etc., etc.,) you really need a fast processor.

There is a new build 1.2.3 that has significant CPU optimization... will be posted in a few hours.
