Open Source NASA Robotics Software - 2007/06/27 16:55 This thread discusses the Content article: Open Source NASA Robotics Software

I'd like to download that but it appears that the YAMlite isnt meant for windows.

Its a shame because if the information on the website is correct, merging CLARTAty with .Net would have huge project potential.

Re:Open Source NASA Robotics Software - 2007/06/27 17:13 I guess you could do the project with Player/Stage and Linux, or run CLARAty on a Linux box and talk to the Bot / some Windows machines over IP...?

Provided you can get the video and sensor data off the Bot to CLARAty, and then send commands back to it you should be able to cook something up.

Re:Open Source NASA Robotics Software - 2007/06/28 17:14 Thanks I would appreciate that.

It strikes me that NASA have been building robots for the best part of 40 odd years so they probably have a few good tricks up their sleeve. At university we were always told that NASA deliberately used old computer technology with a proven track record so they could squeeze the maximum computing power out of resource limited systems whilst guaranteeing manufacturer support.

Re:Open Source NASA Robotics Software - 2007/06/28 20:58 On the subject of prewritten reusable robot code, I saw this:

http://www.skilligent.com/products/index.shtml

on robots.net. Its available for download and looks like you can train a robot to do complex tasks by making gestures.

Re:Open Source NASA Robotics Software - 2007/06/29 00:46 The NASA and DOD standard OS for robotics is secure Linux.

Haven't gone back through this whole thread, but NASA's robotics are built on Jim Albus' 4D Real Time Control System. Albus, a senior fellow at NIST, was an early pioneer in neural nets. The RCS architectures is hierarchical, a hybrid of reactive and adaptive agents, based on hierarchical decomposition of goals. It's oriented to vehicle movement & has been the basis for a number of top DARPA Grand Challenge competitors.

FWIW
