914s perform at the Canadian Museum of Civilization
Monday, 16 April 2007
Last weekend, Tom, Richard, Vincent, and Daisy were invited to the museum to perform a total of 8 shows to teach kids the basics of robotics. Admittedly, Tom was a bit nervous, knowing what happens when kids are introduced to the PC Bots. "Usually, the kids are attracted like magnets to the 914...I've had kids crawling on them, licking and kissing the robots, whacking them with their lollipops, trying to pull parts off of them...you name it and kids have tried it" says Tom - "In a way it's a big compliment that the kids love the 'bots so much...but I was nervous placing Vincent in the line of fire :) "

In the end, it was a great time. We had a lot of fun interacting with the kids and I was surprised how much these kids actually knew about robotics. They ranged in age from 5 to 10 years old and were able to answer many of our questions about the basic workings of robots. Both Vincent and Daisy performed flawlessly at all eight performances (both 'bots escaped with only a few greasy french-fry finger print smears on their paint) and we are all looking forward to working with kids in the future. "It's a personal goal of mine to really expose kids to mobile robotics", says Tom - "I never had those opportunities growing up and I want make sure that robotics is a technology they can explore in a fun and friendly environment".
